WINDSHIELD INSTALLATION

A bunch of clips needs to be installed prior to the windshield. For convertibles there is a set of clips that just runs along the bottom of the windshield opening. The repo clips are alsmost identical to the originals, except the screw holes are a little elongated.

There are two clips that are in the inside at the top of the A-pillars, which are for the plastic A-pillar mouldings. The clips cannot be installed after the glass is in. I was missing one and soon discovered that the repos are too brittle. I was luck enough to find some used ones on line, thanks to classifieds on www.ForBBodiesOnly.com.

Before installing the windshield it is recommended that you mask off the opening, including the dash top, to protect the paint from all the messiness that will ensue.

When you are ready to install the windshield it's a good idea to trial fit the glass without the weatherseal, to make sure there is nothing wrong with the opening and to make sure the windshield sits even all the way around the opeing.. It's also a good idea to dry fit the weatherseal dry. Precision makes the best repo windshield weather seals.

3M 8509 Auto Bedding and Glazing Compound is the proper stuff for setting the weather seal. There should be a thick bead layed down along the entire windshield opening outside lip. The bottom corners and top corners should recieve a doulbe bead of the stuff. I found that it was a lot easier to do this with the seal taped in place and then laying the bead of compound in sections, bedding the weatherseal as you go.

Here is the new windshield I got from ECS Automotive. It was properly date-coded and had the correct logo etched into it.

Windshields are made by bonding two layers of glass together. trimming edge of windshield. It is common for the adhesive to stickout beyond the glass. Excess should be trimmed back so that the windshield sits in the weather seal correctly.

Setting the windshield can be tricky. I just followed the instructions in the service manual. I set the glass in the bottom channel in the weatherseal and used some plastic windshield installation tools to carefully open up the channel in the weather seal and pressed the glass into it. It's pretty nerveracking since it is very easy to crack an windshield.

One the windshield is set, it is beat to fill the gap between the weather seal and the opening.

The inside trim needs to be installed before the outer stainless steel mouldings go on. The plastic A-pillar mouldings are unique to convertibles and are very hard to find. Luckily I had both, though one had to be repaired.

I sent the stainless steel trim out to be polished. The picture on the left is of it before I sent it out.

On the right is a picture of the outer RH A-pillar moulding before installation. A strip of 1 inch foam seal goes on the inside before installation. Also in the picture are the fishhook shaped stainless steel pieces. These hold the end of the lower windshield mouldings in place across the top of the fenders.

Once the A-pillar mouldings are installed a thick piece of gray foam is installed across the top before the top mouldings go on. Unfortunately I didn't take a lot of pictures. Though I am sure I will be adding them to the swebsite at some point.
