< Back IRS Part C: Carrier Assembly Part D >

1) Once everything was dismantled and cleaned, it was time to put it all back together.

2) Here is the inside of the carrier waiting for the friction plates. Even though the dished friction plate on this one was found to be spilt, the inner surface was not damaged.

3) The first friction plate to go in is dish shaped with the dish pointing upwards (inwards).

4) It is followed by a friction dish, a flat friction plate, another friction disk and another flat friction plate.

5) The inner hub is splined and can be easily inserted into the fricitn plates by rotating it.

6) The planetary and sun gears must be positioned correctly. One of the panetary gears and the carrier are marked with yellow paint to indicate the proper location.

7) The second inner hub can then be installed.

8) The rest of the friction plates and disks are then easily stacked. Note that in this case the dished friction plate is facing down.

9) The output shafts must be installed prior to bolting the carrier assembly together. Otherwise they will not be able to be inserted later.

10) The carrier bearings are very easy to install on a press. The bearings are installed both at the same time using the old bearings to press againts to prevent damage to the new bearings.

11) There is just enough of a champher on the old bearings to prevent them from getting pressed in place with the new bearings.

12) The ring and pinion gears are a matched set. This particular ring gear has 2731 carved into it. There is a coresponding 2731 carved into the pinion gear. Both gears need to be inspected for the backlash indication. At least one of the gears will have a +/- number carved into it. In this case the number only appeared on the pinion (shown later).

13) The ring gear is bolted in place from the back side with locking tabs to prevent the bolts from backing out. .

14) Here is the completed carrier assembly ready to be installed in the differetial housing.
