< Back IRS Part B: Differential Taredown Part C >

13) The backlash for the output shaft is set using a spacer and shims. It's best to keep track of which shims came from which side.

14) At this point the output shafts are easily pulled out.

15) The differential carrier can be removed by unbolting the carrier bearing caps. The bearing caps will need to be installed on the same side that each was removed from and in the same orientation. It's always good to take a lot of pictures.

16) Here the differential carrier is removed from the diff case and is ready for disassembly.

17) Here is the differential housing with everything removed accept for the pinion.

18) The crown gear needs to be removed in order to replace the differential carrier bearings (at least for the way that I changed the brearings).

19) I used a cheap bearing seperator from Harbor Freight and a press to remove the differential carrier bearings. A large socket (about 1-1/8") was used to press the carrier out of the bearing.

20) A similar method was used to press the inner bearing from the output shafts.
