29) To remove the distributor gear, the locking tab must first be bent back. A wrench is placed on the square shaft end and the nut is loosened up. Care must be taken as to not break the teeth off the brass gear.
30) The timing gears and chain assembly comes off simply by removing 4 bolts. New chains and guides will be need.

31) The crank timing gear and distributor gear slid right off with a little persuasion.
32) Here it is all ready to removed the crank.

33) The lower rear main bearing cap must be removed to pull the crank. The cap is attached with only 2 socket head screws, which can't be seen in this picture due to too much grease.

35) Jaguar used castle nuts and cotter pins on the connecting rod bolts. Probably not the best idea since a few cotter pins were missing.

36) Uh oh yet again! One of these pistons doesn't look like the other. The number 4 piston has two sets of oil rings. I was later informed by the machine shop that the intake valve guide on cylinder #4 was replaced. Looks like something bad happened to cylinder #4. In the end it didn't cost me anything extra the head got new valves, guides and seats. And of course, the cylinders were bored to fit new pistons.

37) Here the block is with the crank out. The only thing left is to remove the upper half of the rear main seal cap and a few oil and coolant passageway plugs.

38) The crank looked very good. Though it will need a little more than just polishing. There are 12 plugs on the crank that need to be removed so that sludge and old oil can be flushed out of the passages. I left his up to the machine shop.

39) Here is the rear main seal caps. There is an uprated design that can be purchased from many of the Jaguar repo parts places. However, the uprate caps require extra machining.


40) The block was stamped with the correct engine number as well as the head. The white paint I believe is factory..

41) The casting date on the block is September 20, 1962. The heritage report states that the car was built on October 15, 1962 (start build date). So the block casting date checks out. Originality confirmed.

42) Here is a shot looking down cylinder #4. It did not look any different then the other 5. So whatever reason the piston was changed was probably related to a valve.
