Firewall and A-Pillars

The upper cowl vent areas are notriously bad on these cars. The upper cowl panel is welded in place. Leaves and debris which cannot be removed, build up inside due to the top hat design. I was amazingly lucky with this car. I only had a small repair to make, so didn't have to remove the upper cowl panel.

There was a penalty to pay. The small hole allowed water to run down the face of the firewall, so I had to replace the end section. I bought repo firewall of ebay. The repos aren't really correct for this car, so I was lucky I only needed the end to graft to the car.

The inner fender hood hinge reinforcement needed to be replaced on the right side. The repo part is close to the original. I added the missing hole and move the square nut over from the original one.

This area on the windshield pillar traditionaly rusts out due to poor workmanship when leading the seams. This car wasn't too bad. First I removed the lead (using a grinder and respirator).

This area contains several layers of metal. I repaired it one layer at a time. The final touch was to make sure the window molding clip still fit in its pocket and the molding fit properly.

The left side received a similar repair.

The windshield pillar where it meets the top of the A-pillar likes to rust out as well. Again this was repaired one layer at a time.

The tape in the last picture is there for preparation for priming the repair.

The upper and lower corners of the LH cowl needed some small repairs as well. NOthing that couldn't be fixed in a couple hours.

You might have noticed the copper colored primer spots. This is actaully weld-through primer. I like using it because if I see a pinhole I can just hit it with my migwelder to fix it quickly without grinding primer off.

The firewall in the engine bay needed a little work, indicated by the white arrows. I had to make the wire hold-down and brake line hold-down on the passenger side. I had to weld back in thee 4 nuts on the driver's side as they broke free when I removed the steering column.

And this concluded the work I needed to do before I was to build the frame jig.
